San Diego County is one of the most ethnically and geographically diverse areas in the U.S.—ranging from affluent and urban population centers to rural agricultural areas. The Population Sciences and Community Engagement (PopSci) Unit is dedicated to overcoming challenges to research and the dissemination and implementation (D&I) of its benefits to all our communities.

Lead: Mark Wallace, MD
Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology, UC San Diego Center for Pain Medicine
Director of ACTRI Human Centered Research
The ACTRI provides a broad range of resources to support human-centered research (HCR). Clinical research infrastructure and personnel are funded by UCSD and through a cost recovery mechanism. HCR supports ACTRI personnel and tools for training professional staff who collaborate with study teams. These collaborations help ensure proper development and implementation of protocols, safety measures, and adherence to good clinical practices.
By working closely with the Population Science (PopSci) unit, HCR also supports trial recruitment efforts. These combined efforts are expected to elevate the quality and ethical standards of human-centered research, supporting the clinical translation of discoveries across the translational continuum.

The strategic management of the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI), home to our Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) hub, is driven by strong partnerships and dedicated advisory committees. This approach ensures the effective and efficient use of resources to support our mission: advancing the development, validation, and dissemination of clinical and translational science (CTS) strategies that address roadblocks to research and improve outcomes. Our administrative efforts are spearheaded by our Administrative Director Liz Johnson and MPI Dr. Smith. They lead three integrated administrative units: Operations & Research Services (ORS), Business & Finance (B&F), and Evaluation Unit (EU). Together, these units ensure seamless coordination and support for our programs and initiatives
