Clinical and Translational Science Resources

Overview

Researchers face practical and regulatory obstacles to translating scientific discoveries into health innovations. The Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI)Our CTSA hub removes these clinical and translational science (CTS) roadblocks by developing novel approaches and providing investigators with cutting-edge tools, resources, services, and funding opportunities through programs carefully designed to meet scientific and career development needs.

Advancing Discovery: Essential Resources for Clinical and Translational Science

Strategic Management

The strategic management of the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI), home to our Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) hub, is driven by strong partnerships and dedicated advisory committees. This approach ensures the effective and efficient use of resources to support our mission: advancing the development, validation, and dissemination of clinical and translational science (CTS) strategies that address barriers to research and improve outcomes. The seamless integration of the Operations & Research Services (ORS), Business & Finance (B&F), and Evaluation Unit (EU) ensures efficient coordination and support for our programs and initiatives

Population Science and Community Engagement

To advance ACTRI’s mission, the Population Sciences and Community Engagement (PopSci) Unit works to break down barriers to research and ensure the effective dissemination and implementation (D&I) of its benefits across diverse communities. By identifying community health priorities and rigorously evaluating collaboratively developed solutions, PopSci aims to address health disparities. These evidence-based strategies will drive lasting public health improvements and promote health equity, reinforcing our vision of research as a catalyst for community transformation.

Workforce Development

The ACTRI Workforce Development (WD) program fosters a supportive environment where clinical and translational science (CTS) careers thrive. Through innovative initiatives across the career continuum, the program provides accessible training for CTS teams, enhances workforce retention, and strengthens regional and national CTS capacity. By promoting diversity in backgrounds and disciplines, ACTRI WD ensures a skilled and inclusive research community.

Pilots

We support early-stage investigators (ESIs) by providing pilot funding and expert mentoring to advance innovative science and career development. Through open solicitations, we fund high-quality translational science projects designed to help ESIs progress in their careers. Additionally, our Galvanizing Engineering in Medicine (GEM) program fosters interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians and engineers, developing innovative technologies to address complex challenges in clinical and translational science.

Health Informatics

We continuously enhance our enterprise informatics infrastructure to ensure secure data management, storage, and analysis, improving the quality, safety, and speed of research. Our approach emphasizes education, training, and support to help users maximize health informatics (HI) capabilities. We also aim to build a standards-based, interoperable network for sharing data, software, and algorithms locally and across the CTSA consortium. Our HI efforts focus on four key areas: clinical research applications, data extraction services, specialized computing (AI, NLP, big data), and cybersecurity, providing cutting-edge systems to support every stage of the research process
