Pilot Project Awards

About

UC San Diego Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) supports Pilot Projects that help fulfill the ACTRI mission of developing clinical and translational science. Pilot Project Grants are one-year competitive awards (up to $40,000) to provide funding for early stage projects. Pilot Projects are available to all ACTRI members with faculty appointments; funding priority is given to early-career faculty.

2026 Call for Pilot Applications

Application Deadline: January 5, 2026 at 11:59 PM (PST)

Pilot Project Awards RFA

Pilot Project Awards Frequently Asked Questions

The ACTRI Pilot Program supports research efforts, prioritizes high-risk, high-reward concepts, and finances innovative, high-impact initiatives that are not yet ready for extramural funding. Up to six pilot projects awards ($40,000 each) will be funded.

Application Details:

Translational Science Focus

All proposed projects must have a clear clinical and translational science (CTS) focus. Translational science refers to systematic efforts to understand and address roadblocks commonly encountered in translational research. Whereas translational research focuses on moving discoveries from basic science to health implementation, translational science identifies and addresses barriers in the scientific process that can generalized to other translational research projects and scientific fields. Translational science thus enables and accelerates translational research by providing generalizable and scalable scientific and operational innovations, while maintaining scientific and ethical rigor.

Examples include:

  1. Improvements to security process to enable data transfer and storage in electronic health record studies;
  2. Studying the implementation of mobile testing during a disease outbreak;
  3. Research on applications of mobile technology into point of care settings;
  4. Development of models/assays to better predict human processes relative to animal models (e.g. organoids);
  5. Development of frameworks to screen for biomarkers of early disease or treatment efficacy

In each of these examples, the research focuses on addressing a barrier that could affect multiple research studies outside of a specific application/disease focus.

Applicants must note how their project meets this focus, and how specifically the innovation will be disseminated to the broader research community. Projects with a stronger CTS focus will be prioritized for funding. See the following resources for more information: NCATS Translational Science Resources , Montefiore Einstein CTSA; University of Utah CTSA, UAMS CTSA

Clinical & Translational Science Focus and Application Tracks

Applications will be categorized into tracks to facilitate reviewer assignment. Tracks do not represent separate funding pools; all projects compete in a single review process. The purpose of tracks is to ensure applications are evaluated by reviewers with the most relevant expertise.

Applicants will be asked to indicate if their project aligns with one or more of the following tracks:

Device Validation Track: Projects that involve the design, development, testing, or evaluation of medical devices, diagnostics, or related technologies as part of a CTS approach. Applicants must describe how the device addresses a translational roadblock and advances generalizable methods or processes.

Community-Engaged Track: Projects that actively incorporate collaboration with patients, community members, or stakeholder groups to address translational science roadblocks. Applicants must describe the nature of the partnership and how it informs study design, implementation, or dissemination through a CTS framework. In addition, a letter of support from the community partner is required.

General CTS Track: Projects addressing translational science questions that do not fit within the above categories but advance innovative solutions to common research challenges. Applicants must describe how the project addresses a translational roadblock and advances generalizable methods or processes.

Eligibility

Applicants from all UC San Diego departments/divisions and ACTRI partner institutions are invited to apply. Submission of the ACTRI membership application is required for Primary Investigators who are not already ACTRI members.

  • Priority will be given to junior full-time faculty proposing collaborative projects.
  • Postdoctoral Fellows and Project Scientists are not eligible.
  • Principal Investigators must be full-time faculty members at UC San Diego or an ACTRI Partner Institution
  • Previous awardees are not eligible to reapply for 12 months following the conclusion of an awarded Pilot project.
  • Only one pilot proposal may be submitted by a Principal Investigator.
  • Full professors are NOT eligible unless they are entering a new line of research.
  • Proposals cannot overlap with or be a logical extension of ongoing research. In general, proposals from full professors who have greater than $350,000/year in current funding will receive lower priority.

Application Instructions

Application Format

Applications should be well-written, precise, and succinct. Applications will be subject to both scientific and programmatic review. All submissions must adhere to current NIH formatting guidelinesView NIH format guidelines.

Use the table below to structure your proposal, including content and page limits. Additional guidance is provided via the links below.

Item

Description

Page Limit

Proposal

Must follow NIH proposal criteria and include:
1. Specific Aims
2. Background and Significance (must include a statement describing how the project demonstrates a translational science focus)
3. Preliminary Studies (if applicable)
4. Research Design and Methods
5. Literature Cited (not included in the page limit)

Applicants should clearly address the relevance of their selected track throughout their proposal, in the specific aims and research strategy, to demonstrate alignment with translational science objectives and the track’s required elements.

5 pages (excluding references)

Translational Science Focus

Applicants should consider how their project aligns with NCATS’ core principles of translational science.

Respond to these questions:

1)      Translational science identifies and addresses a common inefficiency or barrier that permeates across translational research projects.  What is a potential shared scientific, operational, or administrative challenge that your Pilot Award will address?

 2)      How could your study’s methods or processes be broadly applicable and generalizable to other translational research projects, thereby providing a common scientific or operational innovation that would accelerate research?

 3)      How do you plan on disseminating your findings beyond your immediate field? Provide specific examples of conferences, seminars, colloquia, grand rounds, interdisciplinary journals, etc.

 4)      Do you have cross-disciplinary collaborations? If not, what future cross-disciplinary collaborations could you develop that would help your project evolve into a translational science one?
