The UC San Diego Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI)
is offering a new mentored funded post-doctoral fellowship training
opportunity. The goal of this two-year fellowship is to develop scholars'
skills in advanced clinical and translational research. Through the ACTRI TL1
grant mechanism, two post-doctoral clinical and translational research
fellowships will be supported for up to two years.
The didactic aspect of the fellowship will entail coursework at the
ACTRI's Clinical Research Enhancement through Supplemental Training (CREST)
program. Read details on the curriculum. Financial assistance will be provided to scholars
with coursework tailored to the fellow's prior training and educational needs.
Mentorship and experiential learning opportunities will bolster fellows'
Who is eligible?
At the time of application, candidates must have earned a doctoral
degree (including PhD, MD, PharmD, or equivalent), and typically have no more
than two years of postdoctoral research experience. Subspecialty fellows who
have completed their clinical training year are encouraged to apply. Fellows
are selected based on interest in multi-disciplinary clinical or translational
research, potential for an academic research career, mentoring and training
plan, and excellence in their respective fields. Postdoctoral appointments will
be through home departments.
The focus of this fellowship will be on cross-cutting areas in clinical
and translational research. Candidates seeking experience in areas such as life
course research, health disparities, team science and regulatory science are
strongly encouraged to apply. In addition, priority will be given to applicants
seeking to train with multi-disciplinary collaborative groups in the following
- Child health
- Aging research

Amount of Support
It is anticipated that the amount of support for each scholar will be
consistent with the National
Research Service Award (NRSA) Stipends, Tuition/Fees and Other Budgetary Levels.
Training: Fellows have the option to complete all or portions of the MAS
curriculum during their first year of support (partial financial support is provided).
For individuals with existing advanced clinical research-specific training
(e.g., MPH or PhD in relevant translational field, such as biostatistics or
epidemiology), may select individual course modules from the Clinical Research
Enhancement through Supplemental Training (CREST) program.
Research Experience: Candidates will select primary (and secondary
mentors, if applicable) whose expertise corresponds with their research and
career interests. Applicants must have identified and obtained a letter of
support from the mentor to be included in the application.
Experiential learning opportunities: Fellows may also be offered participatory roles in
ACTRI clinical science administrative activities such as proposal review,
clinical trial preparation, and project management. Experiential learning plans
will reflect each fellow's research career goals.
and other activities: Fellowship
applicants are encouraged to include training activities (symposia, seminars,
journal clubs) through their home departments or in cross-cutting fields.
Evaluation of Progress
Fellows will meet regularly with their mentoring teams and develop a
formal Individual Development Plan. Mentors will provide ongoing informal
feedback regarding progress. In addition, formal evaluations of trainee
progress will be conducted by the primary and secondary mentors and trainees
will be required to submit progress reports during the fellowship period.
