January 10th of this year was a very special, although blustery, day—the CTRI celebrated the groundbreaking for the Altman CTRI Building. On hand were the Altman family, Mayor Bob Filner, Councilwoman Sherri Lightner, Congressman Scott Peters, and other representatives of the Council, State Senate, and Assembly. The building team was represented by members of Zimmer Gunsul Frasca (the architects), Rudolph and Sletten (the building contractor), and UC San Diego Facilities Design and Construction. Other UCSD leaders marked the occasion, including Chancellor Pradeep Khosla; Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine Dr. David Brenner; Health System CEO Paul Viviano; and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics Dr. Gaby Haddad, who is also Physician-In-Chief of Rady Children’s Hospital. They joined me in offering our convictions about the purpose and future of the research that will be done at the Altman CTRI Building.
In fact, the name of our new media campaign is “The Future of Care”. Because when we talk about the new Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute building, we’re not just talking about the future of UC San Diego, or the future of patient care in Southern California. Our goal is to redefine medical care for everyone.
It’s an ambitious goal, but we have what it takes to achieve it. We have passionate, experienced physicians. Brilliant scientists. Informed and motivated patients. And philanthropists like the Altman family, who are not just extraordinarily generous, but also very smart about choosing where to invest their money. We’re honored they’ve decided this is the place that will deliver the greatest return on that investment.
And we have something else—the other essential part of this exceptionally collaborative and entrepreneurial effort. We have visionary leadership at UC San Diego. People who understand the magnitude of what we’ve built these past 50 years—and who see the incredible opportunities now before us.
Redefining Medical Care
In spite of the wintry weather that day, there was a tremendous sense of energy and anticipation among the 200 or so celebrants. We invite you to share our progress by checking back with us here for regular updates. You can also view a short video shown at the groundbreaking ceremony by clicking on the link to the right.
